Artist Photographer and Author
The great outdoor is my studio ........
Although Gilles has always been keen on capturing
life through camera and lens, his artistic endeavours
really began with paper, pencils and brushes in hand.
Through drawing and painting he trained his eye for
composition and the representation of fine details.
For over 20 years now, as an avid outdoorsman, his focus has moved to photographing Canada's diverse natural world but his artistic training and background really shows through as a wildlife fine art photographer.
Artist statement
Photography is all about light and capturing a subject under complimentary conditions. It is also about catching a subject at a specific moment in time in its natural environment. My images have an artistic feel to them but that is no accident. Special attention is always given to lighting conditions, subject pose and overall composition right from the time any subject appears through the viewfinder. The obvious “artsy” look seen in my images is due to several factors which give me the painterly look I am after: appropriate lighting through weather conditions, subject’s location in relation to the camera, subject’s isolation from backgrounds and original compositions. Although very subjective, this is where, for me, “photography becomes art”. Furthermore, there are no digital manipulations in my final prints except for the simple addition of a “vignette” effect around the edges to help draw the eye of the viewer to what is important in the image: “the capture of character and expression in the subject”. Digital "corrections" are kept as simple as possible but quality and style are key elements in my final image.
Prints
All my images are printed on matt “Fine Art papers” of various specifications and textures to achieve optimal quality for any size. And yes, I do my own printing ……..
